Paradise Induction Chapter 6 – Extract 32
The list of duties—numbering many and very thorough—saw Jacob and Doloris covered yet again with the additional clause: This work is to be completed promptly and punctually with any extra duties deemed necessary by Jacob Cain and Doloris Frost. That last sentence could literally mean anything they wish—possibly polishing their shoes, taking their clothing to the dry cleaners, bringing them fresh coffee when they wanted, running errands for them in town.
The open-ended nature of all the clauses in the contract were completely in their favour.

Fifteen minutes had past before I returned to Jacob’s door and knocked.
“Come in,” said Jacob.
I pushed the door open.
