Staring at the contract, I raised my eyebrows, feeling deep down that although this was my dream occupation—exactly what I came to the islands for—these were not my kind of people. 

“Tell you what,” Jacob said, pushing further for my compliance. “Ms. Frost and I have some business to discuss, so if you could read through the contract in reception, then come back to me if all is well, we can have this all signed up and have you ready to go next week.”

“Okay,” I replied. “Thank you very much.”

I stepped outside and returned to the welcome area, where the receptionist was painting her nails. She didn’t acknowledge my presence.
