2020 – Surrendering my Life…Reflecting on 35 Years

7.4.2020.

Our Prime Minister Boris Johnson got rushed to intensive care yesterday.

I’m praying about the level of fear and panic this will bring to our nation if the worst occurs.

(12) A pauper among the rich

1995 – 1996. Age Twelve.

Secondary School commenced – Sept 1996.

I remember my first day at Secondary School Dulwich College.

It was a Wednesday.

I had diarrhoea and messed up my boxer shorts.

I also remember the devastating thought, that in my range of choices achieved via the string of Secondary School Entrance Exams, I’d made the wrong decision.

I’d gained a Government Assisted place for Dulwich College, which meant the government paid the highly expensive school fees.

Additionally, I’d acquired the choice of several other private schools with this offer of subsidy, including Alleyns, City of London, and Emmanuel, but I quickly realised I didn’t pick the right one.

Dulwich College was an ‘all boys” school. The majority of pupils had wealthy parents. They lived in huge houses, situated in places like Orpington and Chislehurst.

I had my small flat in Pimlico, London.

These dynamics made things uncomfortable immediately and I felt it.

The plan behind the choice had been simple:

I was to attend an all-boys’ school so that I did well in my GCSEs and A-levels, unmoved by the prospect of chasing a girlfriend. Then, later on, University would be the place where I’d meet her – the dream girlfriend.

I had no idea how much I was going to regret that decision later on…

I quickly gained a name for myself in not taking lightly to the smug, cocky arrogance of boffins and rich brats, using my State School life-lessons and striking any smart-arse kid that offended me.

One such red-headed, large boy thought he could borrow 60 pence from me for the tuck shop and not return it.

I was on his case until he repaid me for what felt like weeks and weeks.

I still distinctly remember the line he used to try and throw me off.

He was a rich kid and he’d promised he’d pay me, “double-back.”

After hounding him for ages about the one pound, twenty pence he owed me, he said:

“You misheard me. I said I would pay you back double-quick.”

“Well you certainly haven’t paid me back double-quick, have you?” I said.

I also noticed that I provoked fierce rivalry; I’d seen this in Primary School, but it was even more conspicuous.

I’m not going to mention names, but I can still recall the first and surname of all 24 kids in my first class ‘1N’ with form teacher Mr. Nichols.

My memory of 33 out of the 35 years I’ve lived so far, has recorded some uncanny, intricate details!
